The technique of scent marketing is used by advertisers to lure customers. Many times, the scents are subtle, and the person smelling it doesn’t even realize it. This type of marketing is designed to make the customer feel at ease by playing on their sense of smell.
It has been shown that companies that use scent systems in their businesses, sell more and make the consumer that visits want to stay longer. The air in hotel lobbies are often infused with various pleasing scents that calm the customer and put them in a mood where they will more readily part with their money. It is a strategy that is growing in popularity with companies worldwide.
Scent is a chemical sense joined to the mood centre of the brain. Smell is very powerful. It can make us happy, sad, bring up memories of the past, and make people want to buy. Companies are using the sense of smell to attract customers instead of the use of visual and audio ads. Real estate agent’s have long believed that bread baking or cookies on the counter top help to make people want to buy houses. The same is true for other types of businesses.
The reason scent marketing works through the use of scent machines, is because it creates a flow state in the brain, which puts people in a sort of daze, where they become unaware of how much time has passed. This puts them in the mood to stay and spend.
There are companies that are attempting to create their own brand of scent, so that customers will think of them when they smell it. They are even attempting to trademark the smell, so that no one can take their unique smell as their own.
Scent marketing is growing in leaps and bounds, and soon many more companies will follow suit.
